Sharks dispatch under-strength Rangers

April 21, 2018

The SIT Zero Fees Southland Sharks have made it two from two at the NBL Blitz in Palmerston North this morning with a wire-to-wire 98-70 win over an under-strength Supercity Rangers.

Head Coach Judd Flavell was happy with the way his side put the young Rangers line-up away early.

"Realistically there were only two or three guys who will be on the Rangers' roster playing, so it was more of a mental challenge for us. We came out of the blocks well and put the game away early which was pleasing. It's one of those situations where no-one is wanting to show too much of a hand, a week out from the season," Flavell said.

The Sharks led 37-21 at the half before piling on 61 second half points to power to a 28-point victory.

"Lydon (Aoake) again had his moments. He found his spots well and looked confident. Luke (Aston) got hot in the 1st half. That's what you want from a shooter, to find that unconscious feel and just let it go, so that was great to see and Derone (Raukawa) and Tinashe (Matambanadzo) did a good job keeping the foot down, staying aggressive and pushing the pace."

In other games this morning the Wellington Saints defeated the Taranaki Mountainairs 55-49, Nelson Giants beat Bay Hawks 57-56 and Canterbury Rams beat Manawatu jets 72-55.

The Sharks back up against the Manawatu Jets tonight at 7pm.
