Injury interrupts McCarron's southern adventure

April 29, 2019

Injury has interrupted Australian international Mitch McCarron’s stay in the south.

The SIT Zero Fees Southland Sharks’ guard has returned to Australia for treatment on a troublesome knee to ensure he is fully fit prior to Melbourne United’s 2019-20 Australian NBL season.

Sharks Head Coach Judd Flavell has mixed emotions to see one of his star off-season recruits depart.

“Of course we are sorry to see Mitch go. He is a high-quality person and player and he showed what he was capable of over the last three weeks, but he needs to get himself right and it’s that makes it the right decision for Mitch and for the Sharks,” Flavell said.

The coach hasn’t closed the door on McCarron’s possible return before the end of the Sal’s NBL season, as the Sharks await Melbourne United’s evaluation.

“He’s been well looked after since he arrived in Invercargill, but the niggle hasn’t settled so Melbourne will need to make their own assessment and plan his recovery and we’ll be guided by their decision,” Flavell said.

Discussions regarding a potential replacement are already well advanced with the Sharks expected to confirm details over the next few days.
