Invercargill to host Breakers v Wildcats

ILT Stadium Southland officials have landed another coup by locking in a showdown between the New Zealand Breakers and the 2018/19 Australian Basketball League champions.

The Breakers will play the Perth Wildcats in Invercargill in a regular-season fixture on Sunday, November 3.

Tip-off for the game will be at 5pm.

Invercargill had previously hosted pre-season Breakers games, before last year Stadium Southland was granted its first-ever ANBL competition fixture when the Breakers played Melbourne United in November.

Both the crowd and the venue attracted glowing praise from Breakers general manager Dillon Boucher.

A funding package, equating to $90,000 was put together, with the Invercargill City Council, Invercargill Licensing Trust and Community Trust South putting in $10,000 each.

As part of the package a crowd of 2000 was required to make it viable.

That figure was exceeded with 2600 turning up to last year's game to ensure it financially stacked up.

Stadium Southland officials and the Breakers management have struck another deal to ensure an ANBL fixture would also be played in Invercargill during the 2019/20 season.

Stadium Southland general manager Nigel Skelt said he was thrilled that the Breakers were returning to the venue.

"We have a fantastic relationship with the franchise and it shows they have huge confidence in supporting Invercargill and the province."

The community funders – ILT, CTS, and ICC Events have also been hugely supportive to enable the event to happen, Skelt said.

There will some familiar faces in action for the Southland crowd with the Breakers lineup expected to include Southland Sharks star Jarrad Weeks.

Former Sharks players Nick Kay and Mitch Norton are also likely to part of the Wildcats team.

Tickets for the November 3 game will go on sale to the public on Friday from 10am.
