Southland boasts a proud history with the game of basketball and after years of vision, dedication and hard work it all finally paid off as the SIT Zero Fees Southland Sharks joined the New Zealand National Basketball League for the first time in 2010.
Thanks to a determined committee as well as numerous support people all doing their best to keep the dream alive, we were able to deliver arguably the most professional organisation, the most fanatical crowds as well as some of the most exciting basketball the NBL has seen in years.
In 2013 all the hard work paid off when first year head coach Paul Henare took the team to the Bartercard National Basketball League title in style, which was repeated in 2015. Coach Henare was awarded a key to the city by Major Tim Shadbolt in recognition.
