The Southland Sharks have secured the return of one of New Zealand’s most promising young guards, with Sharks Rapid League MVP and breakout performer Tukaha Cooper re-signing for the 2026 season.

Hailing from Kaikohe, Cooper made an immediate impact in his debut campaign with the Sharks, averaging 10 points, 2 assists, and 1 steal per game while shooting an efficient 42% from three-point range.  His poise, consistency and athleticism were all highlighted last season and quickly made him a fan favourite and key piece of the Sharks’ backcourt rotation.

For Cooper, Southland quickly became more than just a place to play, making the choice to return an easy and meaningful one.

“Southland is a great place with great people.  It means a lot to me to be able to put on the Sharks uniform again and represent.  My decision to come back was pretty easy.  I really enjoyed my season with the Sharks and was always keen to return.”

Cooper’s season surged late, scoring in double figures in five of his final six games, including 16 points against the Canterbury Rams in the Semi-Finals and 14 points in the Grand Final against the Wellington Saints.  His strong finished earned him a development player opportunity with the New Zealand Breakers, where he made his ANBL debut on January 9th against the Sydney Kings.

Sharks Head Coach Jonathan Yim welcomed Cooper’s return, highlighting the work behind the numbers.

“Tukaha is one of the best young guards in the New Zealand pipeline.  What I saw last year was his daily commitment and work ethic. I don’t know if anyone put more consistent time into their craft than Tuks did last season.  He earned everything that came his way.”

Yim believes Cooper is poised for another step forward in 2026.

“I’m really happy to have Tuks back and to continue watching him grow – not just as a player, but as a man.  He made tremendous strides last season in his confidence and decision making.  With another offseason under his belt, he’s well positioned for another leap.”

The Southland Sharks will open preparations for the 2026 season later this year.  Their first game will be April 10th at home against the Otago Nuggets with Season Memberships still available at ILT Stadium.
