The Southland Sharks has locked in a naming rights partner for the next two National Basketball League seasons.
SBS Bank has signed a two-year deal in an important development for the Sharks.
SBS already had a strong involvement in the sport over the past few years, not only supporting the on-court team but also assisting in community engagements and initiatives like the “kids go free” programmes.
They have now extended it to the naming rights partnership, adding to its other naming rights deals it has with key Southland sporting teams and events, including the SBS Southland Stags and SBS Tour of Southland.
“This isn’t just about basketball - it’s about getting behind an organisation that makes a meaningful contribution to our Southland community, as well as last year having a fantastic season on the court,” SBS CEO Mark McLean said.
“Continuing our partnerships with the Sharks is Southland supporting Southland, and we’re excited to keep building on that together,” McLean said.
Southland Sharks general manager Murray Brown was delighted it had strengthened its partnership with SBS.
It’s understood Southland coach Jonathan Yim is building a strong roster for a shot at the 2026 NBL title.
A large number of players who advanced to the final this year are expected to return next year for a second season, while some quality additions are expected to soon be confirmed.
The Southland Sharks’ 2026 NBL season will tip off in Invercargill against Otago on Friday, April 10.
