Sharks add first import player in Boone

The Southland Sharks today announced the first of its import players for 2025 with the signing of UNLV Runnin’ Rebels forward Keylan Boone.

Boone comes to Invercargill for his first professional stint, after a five-season college career which included three years at his hometown Oklahoma State, followed by a year with the Pacific Tigers followed by last season with UNLV.

Sharks Head Coach Jonathan Yim has had his eye on Boone for some time and he was an early target for his 2025 squad.

“Keylan is one of the most versatile players I have watched in recent memory. Throughout his college career, he has consistently impacted the game in a variety of ways, whether it’s scoring, defending multiple positions, or creating opportunities for his teammates. His ability to contribute across the board makes him an invaluable addition to any roster.”

“When building a team, you want players like Keylan. Talking to his former coaches, the qualities they have described to me are his adaptability, his passion and joy for the game, and his relentless work ethic. He embraces every challenge, takes pride in doing the little things that lead to winning, and plays with a team-first mentality that elevates those around him.”

“I am truly honoured to have Keylan’s trust as he embarks on his professional basketball career. From the moment he steps on the court, I know his energy, intensity, and drive will resonate with our team and fans alike. When the Shark fans see the passion he plays with and the impact he makes toward winning, he will become an immediate fan favourite in the Shark Tank,” Yim said.

Boone follows in the footsteps of another UNLV graduate Rene Rougeau (2010) along with championship winners Brian Conklin (2013-14) and Conor Morgan (2018) as players who have started their pro careers at the Sharks and he is so thankful for the opportunity.

“I’m very excited to be a part of the Sharks and blessed for the opportunity to play in a great league. Can’t wait to bring some medal home to Invercargill! Coach Jonathan is a life saver. I’m blessed and excited to play under him. His NBA personnel and coaching experience just makes me feel better, not only as a Shark, but as a young basketballer moving forward in his career. I can’t wait for his vision and my play to collide on the hardwood,” Boone said.

Boone grew up with a basketball in his hand, playing the game competitively early in his teenage years.

“Basketball was just something fun and enjoyable at the time and I was clueless about the impact it would have on my life. I fell in love with the game. From playing AAU with PWP, to growing and playing in college at Oklahoma State, Pacific, and UNLV it has already been unforgettable,” he said.

But Boone is by no means satisfied. He is hungry for success and the Tulsa native has made it clear he is a big fan of winning.

“Under Coach Yim and his leadership, I believe we can be up with the best in the league. Already seeing the notable names coming back and some great players being announced, I have nothing but confidence we can be in play to hold a trophy at the end.”

“My goal is to compete for a title and to help the team in any way, shape or form possible. I’m looking to expand my versatility and help become a leader. I want to ensure I am a name that New Zealand and the NZNBL remembers,” he said.

Sharks Fans will be hoping for exactly the same at the end of the 2025 season.
