The Southland Sharks are excited to announce the signing of Max Darling ahead of the 2026 NZNBL season, adding a versatile and experienced forward as the club continues to build its roster for the year ahead.
Darling is currently a member of the New Zealand Breakers and brings a strong NZNBL résumé to Invercargill, having spent the past five seasons with the Canterbury Rams, where he was an instrumental part of two championship-winning teams. A proven performer at both the domestic and international level, Darling has earned 12 caps with the Tall Blacks, most recently representing New Zealand at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, where he averaged 8.5 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game.
Darling said he is excited by the opportunity in Southland and the environment surrounding the club. “I’m most excited to play for Southland because I hear the fans are great,” Darling said. “I see this as a really good opportunity to improve my game, and I’m looking forward to working with Coach Yim and the rest of the team.”
He also highlighted the makeup of the group and the role he hopes to play. “This is a young and talented team, and I’m looking forward to bringing some experience and leadership. On the court I’ll bring a lot of energy and defence. I can’t wait to get to Invercargill and play in front of the Sharks fans — it’s going to be another great year.”
Head Coach Jonathan Yim said Darling’s addition brings important versatility and experience to the group.
“I couldn’t be more excited to be adding Max to our team,” Yim said. “His versatility and skill set add real value to what we’re building. He’s proven himself at the NZNBL level, has championship experience, and has competed at the highest levels internationally. He understands what winning environments look like and what it takes to be successful.”
Yim also pointed to the strong alignment identified throughout the recruitment process.
“Through the recruitment process, it was clear that Max aligns with the standards and values we have here with the Sharks. He’s motivated to keep growing, and we believe this environment will allow him to continue to evolve. I’m fired up to have Max joining our team and know the fans are going to be absolutely fizzed to see him rocking the orange in the Shark Tank.”
With Darling set to pull on the Sharks jersey, the Southland Sharks continue to build excitement as preparations for the 2026 season gather pace.
