Quality coaching sits at the heart of what makes Southland sport so special. Today we are showcasing the nominees for the BDO Coach of the Year at this year’s ILT Southland Sports Awards.
In his debut season coaching the Southland Sharks, Jonathan Yim oversaw a rollercoaster season which ultimately ended with a runner-up finish in the NBL following a white-knuckle grand final loss to the Wellington Saints.
After struggling their way through the first half of the season, the Sharks embarked on a nine-game winning streak which saw them finish the regular season in fourth place and win playoff games against the Auckland Tuatara and the defending champion Canterbury Rams, in Christchurch, to qualify for the final.
Jonathan also quickly endeared himself within the Southland community, speaking at business events, meeting with sponsors and fans, and attending events such as the Bluff Oyster and Food Festival. Some Sharks fans even went as as far as renaming the city ‘Yimvercargill’ during the team’s playoff run.
