How the Sharks put together title-contending roster

Southland Sharks coach Jonathan Yim has revealed some players took pay cuts to help keep the bulk of the roster together for a crack at the 2026 National Basketball League title.
The Sharks have made an impressive start to their 2026 season, recording six straight victories to sit top of the NBL table.
They have done that despite still having two Tall Blacks to add to their roster for the remainder of the season - Max Darling and Tobias Cameron.
Darling has missed the first eight games with a calf injury, while Cameron has just finished playing in England and will now join the Sharks.
Not surprisingly, it has raised a few eyebrows around the league as to how the Sharks have managed to squeeze so many quality players under the league’s salary cap.
In recent years, the Sharks had struggled to attract high-level players to Southland and probably had to offer over market rate to try to entice marquee players to move from the bigger centres to Invercargill.
But that narrative appears to have changed under Coach Yim.
