New Shark Tobias Cameron signs for 2026

The Southland Sharks have added toughness, versatility, and defensive edge to their roster with

the signing of Tobias Cameron for the upcoming 2026 season.

Cameron joins the Sharks after spending last season with the Franklin Bulls and is currently

competing overseas with the Cheshire Phoenix in the United Kingdom. He is committed to completing his season with the Phoenix before returning to New Zealand.

While playing in the UK, Cameron is averaging 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per contest. At the international level, Cameron has also represented the Tall Blacks, appearing in two games during the 2024 Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Sharks Head Coach Jonathan Yim is excited to welcome Cameron and believes his edge and

competitive nature make him a natural fit for the group. “We’re excited to welcome Tobias to the

Sharks. What stood out to me last season was how hard Tobias plays and how competitive he

is. We really sought out players with his makeup and skill set and believe that he’s the perfect

addition to our team.”

For Cameron, the decision to head south came down to how closely the club’s culture and

direction aligned with what he values.

“It felt like the right fit—the right group of people to surround myself with as I chase success both personally and collectively. They have everything

I value from a team standpoint. All I see are competitors across the team, staff, and club, as well as a supportive and uplifting community. There’s plenty of history that comes with the Sharks, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Cameron is also clear about the standard he plans to bring each day in Southland. “Southland

will get everything I have to offer—toughness, one-percenters, and plenty of laughs. I’m keen to

represent you all on and off the court and looking forward to having the Shark Tank rocking.”

Yim added that Cameron’s commitment reflects the momentum building within the programme

and the growing belief in what Southland offers players both on and off the floor. “To get a

player like Tobias to commit to us this season is a huge win—not just for our team, but for the

wider community. We’re showing people that Invercargill is a place where you can come, be

supported, put in real work, and continue to get better at basketball while being part of

something that matters.”

Cameron will join the Sharks upon the completion of the Cheshire Phoenix season. The Sharks will open their 2026 campaign at home on April 10th against the Otago Nuggets at ILT Stadium Southland. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more roster announcements in the coming weeks, with season memberships still available at ILT Stadium Southland.
